Mabry’s Story: Finding Freedom, Strength, and Joy Through Her Amtryke

When Clayton and Emily Miller learned at their 20-week ultrasound that their daughter Mabry had Spina Bifida, their world stopped. The diagnosis meant Mabry would face lifelong challenges with mobility, including paralysis, surgeries, and countless medical interventions. “We were devastated,” Clayton recalls. “We were afraid of what her future would be like.”

But today, Mabry’s story is one of joy, resilience, and freedom—thanks in part to an adaptive tricycle from AMBUCS.

A New Chapter of Possibility

Nearly three years after that difficult diagnosis, the Millers have discovered that their journey is about more than medical challenges. It’s about connection, community, and unexpected blessings.

“The power of community has been incredible,” Emily shares. “Other parents and therapists have become family to us. And the support from organizations like AMBUCS has truly changed our lives.”

That support came to life when Mabry received her own Amtryke adaptive tricycle, specially designed to meet her unique physical needs.

“Watching Mabry ride her bicycle for the first time was one of those moments of unspeakable joy,” Clayton says. “There was a time when we didn’t know if that would ever happen.”

Growth on Every Level

Since receiving her Amtryke, Mabry’s endurance, coordination, and confidence have soared. “She recently started taking her first independent steps without her walker,” Clayton shares proudly. “We know that happened around the same time she started riding her tryke—and that’s no coincidence.”

Having a therapeutic tryke at home that fits her body has helped strengthen her muscles and given her the confidence to move in new ways.

“Most importantly,” Emily adds, “we’ve seen a huge boost in her self-esteem. Before, she used a stroller or a wagon for long distances. Now, thanks to her Amtryke, she has wheels that go ‘really fast,’ as she says—and she rides right alongside her friends.”

More Than Movement

Every ride has become a symbol of independence and belonging. What used to require help is now something Mabry proudly does on her own.

“She’s gone from saying, ‘Mommy, push me,’ to shouting, ‘No, Mommy! Don’t touch the handle—I ride all by myself!’” Emily laughs. “It’s been beautiful to see her realize that she can do hard things.”

Beyond the physical benefits, Mabry’s Amtryke has helped her participate in play, reduce anxiety, and feel included—just like any other child.

“All people deserve this,” Emily says. “To enjoy the freedom that comes with mobility and independence.”

The Heart of the Mission

Mabry’s story embodies everything AMBUCS stands for: giving children and adults of all abilities the opportunity to move, grow, and thrive.

As the Millers shared during Savannah AMBUCS’s 12th Annual Bowlapalooza Kickoff and Auction, “We’re eternally grateful for this gift. There’s nothing like seeing your child proud of herself. The Amtryke didn’t just give her a way to move—it gave her confidence, joy, and a chance to be just like everyone else.”
